The Saskatchewan Alternative Initiatives has moved from downtown into a new facility in Saskatoon’s north end. The community group which has been supporting those with intellectual disabilities since 1997 receives annual funding of more than $6 million dollars from the government of Saskatchewan which helped with the move into a bigger building.
Tim Jones, Executive Director of Saskatchewan Alternatives Initiatives says the new building on 58th Street offers a new drop in space which provides additional opportunities for individuals such as pet therapy, art therapy and the chance to plan their own events such as board game nights and karaoke nights. Jones adds the new facility also provides more educational opportunities such as cooking classes and dance classes. SAI currently operates two group homes, 12 group living homes, one supported independent living program and one day program. The work done by SAI also supports the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy which was released in 2015. The strategy’s main focuses are transportation, respite, accessibility legislation, residential services, service co-ordination and navigation, and awareness/understanding of the rights of people experiencing disabilities.
