The leader of the Saskatchewan NDP says the government needs to do more to support local medicine. A recent report showed Saskatchewan needs just under 28 general pediatricians and 42 pediatric physicians by 2022-23 to meet the demands of the medical system. Ryan Meili says the government needs to do it’s part to make sure those in Saskatchewan have a fair chance at filling the medical positions available. Meili says we see good quality graduates coming out of our medical programs ready to work, but the provincial government doesn’t make the positions available so we lose them to other provinces. Health Minister Jim Reiter spoke earlier about the shortage of specialists at the new children’s hospital a year out, as only 52 out of 70 spots have been filled. He says they still have a year and a half, and things can change.
