A Saskatoon resident is worried about the impact of the proposed development for the City Yards on existing downtown businesses. Peggy Sargeant who worked on the North Downtown Master Plan is disappointed there is no reference to the initiative in the proposal by Arbutus Developers. Arbutus President Jeff Drexel believes existing businesses will benefit from the development which includes a grocery store. However, Sargeant is worried about possibly taking customers away from Safeway on 33rd Street. Sargeant is also worried by Mayor Charlie Clark’s call for a quick but thorough examination by city staff fearing it won’t consider the full implications on retailers and office owners. Arbutus is hoping to present a detailed plan after six months of study.
