Right now, there are 78 long-term drinking water advisories on First Nations across Canada.
Three Saskatchewan First Nations have been able to end their long-term advisories.
Red Earth Cree Nation lifted its water advisory on March 2nd, Poundmaker on the 15th and Cowessess First Nation on March 22nd.
Two years ago, the federal budget announced funding over 5 years for on-reserve water and wastewater infrastructure and drinking water monitoring.
In this year’s federal budget, additional funding over 3 years has been added to accelerate the progress.
Indigenous Services Canada says they are working to address both long-term advisories and those that are at risk of becoming long term.
Since November of 2015, 57 long-term drinking water advisories, lasting one year or more, have been lifted but 30 have been added in that same time period.
