The grand re opening of a high school in La Loche which was the scene of a deadly shooting January 22nd of 2016 is set for this afternoon (Fri). Four people died and 7 were injured.
A 21 year old teacher’s aide, Marie Janvier, and 35 year old teacher, Adam Wood, died at the Dene High School and brothers, 17 year old Dayne and 13 year old Drayden Fontaine were shot and killed in their nearby home.
A young man who was almost 18 at the time of the shooting pleaded guilty in October of 2016 to 2 counts of first-degree murder, 2 counts of second-degree murder and 7 counts of attempted murder. He was sentenced last May as an adult to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years, but he is appealing.
The Dene High School has been open since shortly after the shooting, but now the renovations to the entrance, washrooms and a wellness area are complete. NDP MP for Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River, Georgina Jolibois, will be speaking at the event this afternoon, which will be a grand opening of the renovations and a memorial ceremony.
