A four year project at the University of Saskatchewan Crop Development Centre will work on boosting protein content in yellow peas to 26 percent from the current 23 percent.
Tom Warkentin is receiving funding the new Strategic Research Initiative (SRI), which pursues innovative research that addresses complex challenges. SRI is supported by the federal and provincial governments through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
Additional contributions are anticipated from Genome Canada now that funding has been secured through SRI. The total budget for the yellow pea protein project will be approximately $6 million.
Warkentin spoke to reporters following the announcement at CropSphere on January 16th.
