It’s my Parting Shot to remind some blow-hard members of Rider Nation that not everyone in Canada loves the C-F-L…
The extreme swaying of emotions with the fans of the Saskatchewan Roughriders makes for some amusing irony!
For instance, Green and White supporters haven’t really warmed to Chris Jones as G-M and head coach. And, the first hint of a bad decision on a free agent signing or player being drafted results in barbs being thrown John Murphy’s way.
Well, the province doesn’t have John Murphy to kick around anymore! And, RiderNation is up in arms!!
Seriously?!!!
It’s as if Saskatchewan Roughriders’ fans are just realizing that the C-F-L implemented a hard cap of $2.7 million for no more than 14 football operations staff for each of the nine teams, effective in 2019, back in the summer. Back then, those that did notice felt this was a punishment against the Green and White. Now, after Murphy and the Riders mutually parted ways Tuesday, some Saskatchewan fans have gone so far as to say the new football ops cap is akin to “communism!”
In theory, you could say that. But, aside from, maybe, Winnipeg and Ottawa, none of the other C-F-L teams can afford to have bulky staffs with inflated payrolls like the Roughriders have had. John Murphy didn’t like the new terms laid out for him to continue as the Green and White’s assistant vice-president of football operations and player personnel…now he’s gone. We’ll see if any other team can afford to hire him under the new rules.
Fact is, the majority of C-F-L teams aren’t as financially “flush” as the Saskatchewan Roughriders are. Without salary caps on players and football ops staff, the Riders would soon win the Grey Cup every year…in a one-team league!
That’s my Parting Shot, I’m Les Lazaruk…
