The federal Minister of Heath and Saskatchewan’s Health Minister have signed a bilateral agreement to improve access to treatment for people with substance abuse disorders. The agreement means $5-million in funding from the federal government to recruit and train more health care professionals qualified to provide opioid-substitution therapy and other non-prescribing professionals such as counsellors and social workers. The funding will also be used to train health care providers to adjust treatment and care plans based on the root of the substance abuse and will increase access to treatment for those dealing with opioid or crystal meth addictions. This funding matches $7.4-million the province has already invested in expanding access to opioid substitution therapy.
