The RCMP is reminding residents in northern communities in particular about the traffic laws and regulations for ATVs.
That’s because All Terrain Vehicles are a common mode of transportation in the north.
While on private land, there are no regulations on use of ATVs, but on public land, drivers need to be 16 or older with a valid licence.
However, youth between 12 and 15 can drive on public land and may cross roads, but are not permitted to drive on them otherwise.
They also need to have passed an approved training course or be supervised by someone who has had a licence for at least a year.
An approved helmet is need while driving in public areas and RCMP strongly recommend that one always be worn.
Impaired driving on an ATV is illegal whether on public or private land and there are legal consequences which are the same as driving any other type of vehicle while impaired.
