Harvesting has begun in southern Saskatchewan, that from Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly crop report. Lack of moisture and heat are drying crops across the province although Shannon Friesen, a crop extension specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture says crops are looking to be in good condition in and around the Saskatoon area. As for Kindersley, a region that has been experiencing a variety of conditions within the area with producers receiving little or no rain to other producers receiving 2 to 3 inches of rain all in the same period. Friesen says crops are in fair or excellent condition in the area depending on the amount of moisture a producer may have received. Most of the province didn’t receive much rain during the July 24th to 30th period. The Arborfield area received 22mm while the Macklin region received 20mm. In regards to topsoil moisture, conditions are worse given the lack of rain and hot temperatures. Throughout the province, topsoil moisture conditions are rated as 33 per cent adequate, 43 per cent short and 18 per cent very short. Majority of the damage to crops was caused by lack of rain, hot temperatures and strong winds. A more in-depth look at this week’s crop report can be found by clicking on the link below:
