Former Saskatchewan Party MLA and Minister of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing and later the government’s Military Liaison, Yogi Huyghebaert, has passed away at the age of 74.
Premier Scott Moe expresses his condolences on behalf of Sask Party MLAs to Huyghebaert’s family and friends.
Moe says, “After a long and distinguished military career, Yogi could have chosen to enjoy his retirement, but instead, he decided to continue his public service as one of the first members of the Saskatchewan Party.”
He was a four-term MLA in opposition and government representing his Wood River constituency and rural Saskatchewan.
The Premier calls Yogi a good friend.
Flags at the Legislative Assembly will be lowered to half-staff until Huyghebaert’s funeral.
Huyghebaert joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1961 and was selected for pilot training and received his wings in 1968 serving as a squadron pilot in West Germany and a member of the embassy staff in Washington, DC before flying with the world famous Snowbirds.
He received the Order of Military Merit for his exceptional service with the Canadian Forces.
