Seniors with limited mobility at the Luther Special Care retirement home in Saskatoon can now go for bike rides.
LutherCare Communities has bought two customized bicycles from Denmark that can carry two passengers up front on recreational rides.
Volunteer cyclists pilot the power-assisted three-wheeled “tri-shaws” as part of the “Cycling Without Age ” program.
The program started in Denmark six years ago now has 12-hundred chapters worldwide and this one is the first in Saskatchewan.
Program officials say there are more than psychological benefits. They report seniors who take part experience pain reduction, improved appetite and sleep better.
