The risk for West Nile virus infection in southeast Saskatchewan is on the rise.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority reports that this past week, some of the Culex tarsalis mosquitoes caught in surveillance traps were found to be infected.
They were in the Estevan area.
It’s a few weeks earlier than their arrival in 2016, but the SHA says it’s about the same time as 2017.
To reduce your risk of infection, some precautions include using an insect repellant which contains DEET.
Drain standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs.
Wear long sleeves and pants and mosquito-proof your home by making sure the doors and windows have tight fitting screens.
The provincial government advises that regardless of the West Nile virus risk level for you area, there is no such thing as “risk-free”, so take precautions.
