New motor vehicle sales are up in Canada and in Saskatchewan across the first five months of the year. It is informative to track those numbers because the sales figures can be used as an indicator of economic growth and consumer spending, and is closely tied to consumer confidence. Sales across Canada were up in every month, starting at 120,179 units sold in January and growing to 220,264 in May. In dollar terms, that’s about $5 billion in January and just over $9 billion in May.
Statistics Canada says sales started off at 3,429 units sold in January in Saskatchewan, then dipped to 3,000 in February and climbed up to just under 5,000 in May. In dollar terms, there was $152.5 million worth of sales in January rising to $224.5 million in May.
