I managed to catch a bit of the U.S. Open golf tournament between yard chores on the weekend. If you don’t golf and/or have no interest this won’t mean much to you but for anyone with a keen interest in the game you must have noticed a couple of things: one was that the organizers went way too far to make the course hard to play. The U.S. Open has a reputation for difficulty but this one was ridiculous. The greens were shaved down to virtually nothing so the players might as well have been putting on concrete. The other notable factor was the noisy, unruly spectators with their loud catcalls and stupid remarks. Maybe they encourage that at this particular tournament, but I’d rather watch the Masters, thank you very much, where the onlookers are polite and subdued as befits a game that for the players is 90% mental. When it comes to golf, I’m just a duffer, so I’ll never play in a tournament that has spectators watching me hit my shots, thank goodness. I have enough trouble as it is. Actually, I do have a good short game. Too bad it’s off the tee. If I ever reached a par 5 in 2, they’d change that hole to a par 4.
That’s Coffeetalk. I’m Vic Dubois.
