While in the pursuit of a suspect after a stolen vehicle was abandoned, Saskatoon Police say he tried to drown one of their police dogs.
Around 11 o’clock Monday night, a police dog team tried to stop a stolen Mercedes near the intersection of Circle Drive and 11th Street West. The driver sped off and left Saskatoon on Highway 16.
RCMP used a tire deflation device, so the suspect abandoned the car east of Radisson and allegedly tried to steal another one before running into a field on foot. The police plane guided ground units to the suspect’s location in a slough, however officers say he made threats and multiple attempts to drown the dog.
There was a physical altercation before the man was taken into custody. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries from a dog bite. No officers were injured but the dog was taken to the vet clinic for evaluation and later released.
A 34 year old man is facing charges that include possession of stolen property over $5-thousand, dangerous driving, robbery and causing unnecessary suffering to a police dog.
