Zoning bylaws when it comes to cannabis retail stores and public places such as parks, schools, and libraries in Saskatoon will have to wait another month to become finalized.
After a discussion that lasted more than two hours Monday night, councilors rejected the proposed zoning bylaw that would have seen cannabis retail stores in the Broadway area have their property lines no closer to the listed public places than 60 meters and a buffer zone of 160 meters for the rest of the city.
Instead a motion was put forward by Councillor Darren Hill to have a 60 meter buffer zone throughout all of the city and to allow the option to have a reduced separation distance subject to discretionary use of approval for specific cannabis related shops.
Since Monday’s proposed bylaw was presented during a public hearing, councilors didn’t have the option of making the amendment then.
Instead the new proposed bylaw has to be drafted and presented to council at next month’s council meeting.
