There are so surprises with the start of mosquito season in Saskatoon. City entomologist Jeff Boone says the mosquito count for last week was typical for this time of year. He attributes the low numbers to the late snow melt but points out mosquito volume for the rest of the spring and summer will depend on the amount of rain. Boone also says since the snow is gone the tent caterpillars are coming back. Boone expects they will only last until mid-June and are no threat to trees. He says people who can’t wait, can pull the insects off and stomp them or resort to environmentally friendly sprays available at garden stores.
