Saskatchewan’s official opposition is urging the SaskParty government to provide a provincial strategy to combat sexual assault.
Justice critic Nicole Sarauer says this province has the dubious distinction of being the only province without one, and yet has the second worst rate of sexual assault in Canada.
She accuses the government of not having proper funding in place.
For instance, Sarauer says, the Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre hasn’t been properly funded for the last six years.
Justice Minister Don Morgan emphasized that the issue is taken seriously, and they have taken action but he realizes they need to do more.
He says a report will be released in a few days that will shed more light on this issue.
Morgan adds the province also recently approved legislation to allow victims of violence to break residential leases, to take up to 10 days of unpaid leave and to have access to free legal advice. (CKRM)
