The Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be speaking in Saskatoon about the 94 Calls to Action.
The free, public event is Tuesday night on the University of Saskatchewan campus and is presented by the Saskatoon Community Foundation. Senator Murray Sinclair has said in the past that 7 generations went through residential schools and were told they weren’t as valued as non-aboriginals and they need to give up their way of life. At the same time, non-aboriginals were being told the same thing. It took many generations to get to this point, Sinclair says, and it will take a few generations for true progress on the Calls to Action. There is no quick and easy solution. Executive Director of the Saskatoon Community Foundation, Carm Michalenko, advises to register for the Conversation on Reconciliation through their website. The SCF also has a chance for Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations to work together on a project that involves a Call to Action, with a total of $400-thousand in grant money up for grabs over the next 4 years. The deadline for entries is May 1st, with $100-thousand to be handed out this year.
